Do you need to Re-charge?

Think about it, what is the first thing we do as a technological-crazed society when our electronics’ battery life shifts to RED at 20%? If you’re like me, we scramble like maniacs to find a source of power (Don’t sit here and like you don’t do it, it’s coo). Well, Just like anything that requires energy to sustain, we as humans need to re-up every once in a while. So, how do you re-charge when you’re feeling depleted/defeated? I can tell you from personal experience that there is nothing more revitalizing than driving 50 minutes to my hometown, walking into my mama’s house, pouring up a tall glass of blue raspberry Kool-Aid that’s so sweet, its sour, then sitting on the leather couch in the living room. Kickin’ it with my newborn niece and brilliant nephew, who continuously draws comparisons to how I behaved as a child, somehow transitions into talking about all of the crazy things I did at his age. There’s nothing like it.

During these nest visits (as I like to think of them), I make my way to our old boarded up house that looks as if it’s going to collapse any minute. Miraculously, it’s still standing every time I make my way down sixth & mason avenue. I always say “one day I’m going to buy it back for my mama”. I know it’s becoming a nuisance to people in my circle. I try to keep my diet at least semi-healthy when I go home, but every once in a while it’s a must that I pick up a Mr. Scribs pizza. Trust me, if you know anyone from Muskegon, Michigan, then I don’t have to say anything else about it. The last part of my re-charging session is a casual ride out to pier Marquette. I have to admit; growing up I took this natural beauty for granted. Once I moved away for college and realized that where was not an easily accessible beach around the corner, I immediately felt the difference. It was almost a sense of detachment. The sights, sounds, and smells of pier Marquette are just what I need to re-charge after carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders on a daily basis.

When it’s all said and done, self-care is the best care. I can’t stress to you enough how important it is to find what it is that revitalizes your being. You CANNOT expect to give your best on a daily basis if you aren’t recharging your battery outside of getting a good nights rest. It’s so much more complex. Now, by no means am I a life coach nor do I have it all “figured out”. What I’ve discovered is that sometimes we have to stay in touch with ground zero as a reminder of the direction we want to go. If you’re reading this, I want to encourage and challenge you today to find your lightning cable.

As always,

journey ahead
